Senior Component Engineer – Passive Optical Alignment
reporting to the Director of Engineering
Background
OneChip Photonics is a venture-funded private company developing a new technology platform which combines indium-phosphide-based, photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and passive optical alignment. This technology has been used to demonstrate low-cost transceivers for the fiber-to-the-premise market and will expand to create new products to meet the rapidly growing demand for the increased communication-bandwidth requirements which are associated with transmission of video signals to smartphones and other personal communication devices.
Description of responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for delivering and documenting silicon optical bench (SiOB) designs and fabrication processes which achieve passive alignment of optical components in a manner that is suitable for high-yield, large-volume production. He or she should be capable of designing and executing measurements which can be used as feedback to achieve improved process control. He or she must prepare drawings, bills of materials, manufacturing process procedures and other documentation needed for production. The SiOBs will be fabricated by an external contractor. The candidate is expected to interact with this contractor to devise ways to properly inspect and screen the wafers, to provide feedback to the design team for yield improvement. The candidate must work closely with the PIC development team and other groups in Engineering and Manufacturing.
Experience/Education
The candidate should have prior experience in silicon or other semiconductor wafer processing and solder metallurgy and must have demonstrated success in developing designs and processes which have been transferred to manufacturing. He or she should have good communication skills and the ability to generate the comprehensive level of documentation that would be required for contract manufacturing. Experience in the alignment of optical beams to single-mode optical fibers or waveguides is desirable.
A BS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent training with 10 years experience in a manufacturing environment, or an MS with at least 5 years experience is required.
